Federal appeals court judge is accused of bullying her clerks (NPR)
Judge Sarah Merriam “is a bully, in all the ways one might bully their employees: yelling, berating clerks, sending all-caps unhinged emails," said Aliza Shatzman, President and Founder of The Legal Accountability Project. Shatzman spoke with NPR about LAP’s first judicial misconduct complaint, filed against Second Circuit Judge Sarah Merriam.
The federal judiciary has long exploited clerks’ fears of retaliation - which they are not legally protected against, since the judicial branch is exempt from Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and all federal anti-discrimination laws - to chill law clerk complaints against judges. That ends now.
