Maryland Federal Judge Admits to Creating Abusive Chambers Environment

LAP’s President and Founder, Aliza Shatzman, spoke with Law 360 about a Maryland federal judge who acknowledged creating an “abusive workplace” in chambers following a judicial misconduct complaint filed by a former law clerk. According to a Fourth Circuit disciplinary order, clerks were chastised for minor mistakes, discouraged from asking questions, and subjected to harsh criticism, contributing to a culture of fear and stress. Although the judge accepted responsibility for the harmful environment and agreed to corrective measures such as training and oversight, the case underscores ongoing concerns about the judiciary’s self-policing system and the lack of meaningful accountability when judges mistreat their clerks.
